Installing OTL STI Solid Shifter Bushing w/ OTL Grayson

Upgrade Your STI with an OTL Solid Shift Bushing: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you're tired of the sloppy feel of your OEM shift bushing in your Subaru STI, it's time for an upgrade. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of replacing that worn-out bushing with a high-quality OTL solid shift bushing, designed to provide a more precise and satisfying shifting experience.

Subaru STI solid shifter bushing install (HOW TO)

Why Upgrade to a Solid Shift Bushing?

The factory-installed shift bushing in your STI is made from plastic, which tends to wear out over time. As the bushing deteriorates, it results in a loose and imprecise feel when shifting gears. By upgrading to an OTL solid shift bushing, you’ll eliminate this play, giving your shifter a bolt-action rifle feel that enhances driving confidence and precision.

Tools You'll Need:
  • 14mm ratchet and wrench
  • 12mm socket
  • Pry bar
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Lift (if available, otherwise a jack and jack stands)

Step 1: Preparing the Vehicle

Before you start the installation, it's essential to ensure your vehicle is properly supported. If you're working with a lift, raise the car to a comfortable height. If not, make sure the vehicle is securely lifted with jack stands.

Step 2: Remove the Factory Pitch Stop Mount

Start by removing the factory pitch stop mount. This is crucial to create the necessary space to tilt the transmission down, which allows access to the shift bushing. If your STI has a top-mount intercooler, you'll need to remove it to access the 14mm bolt. Once loose, set the pitch stop mount aside.

Step 3: Create Space by Lowering the Transmission

With the pitch stop mount out of the way, it's time to lower the transmission. Place a pull jack or a similar support under the transmission to prevent it from dropping too far. Next, remove the transmission cross brace and unbolt the downpipe, allowing it to pivot downwards with the engine. This step is critical to ensure you have enough room to access the shift bushing.

Step 4: Remove the OEM Shift Bushing

Now that everything is prepared, it’s time to remove the old, worn-out OEM shift bushing. First, remove the small clip holding the reverse lockout mechanism in place. Be careful not to lose the small metal washer behind it. Use a 14mm ratcheting wrench to loosen the bolt holding the bushing in place. The bolt doesn't need to be fully removed; just loosen it enough to slide the bushing out.

Step 5: Install the OTL Solid Shift Bushing

With the old bushing removed, it’s time to install the new OTL solid shift bushing. Pay close attention to the orientation of the bushing—one end is longer than the other, and the shorter end should face the rear of the car. Once aligned correctly, slide the bushing into place and tighten the bolt. Make sure the fastener is snug but not too tight, allowing the shift mechanism to move freely.

Step 6: Reassemble the Components

After the new bushing is installed, begin reassembling the components. Start by repositioning the shifter and ensuring it aligns correctly. Reattach the reverse lockout mechanism, securing it with the clip and washer you set aside earlier. Finally, raise the transmission back up and reattach the cross brace, downpipe, and pitch stop mount.

Step 7: Test the Shifter

With everything reassembled, it's time to test your new shifter setup. Inside the car, move the shifter through all the gears, checking for smooth and precise movement. You should notice a significant improvement in the feel of the shifter—solid, with little to no play.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading to an OTL solid shift bushing is a worthwhile investment for any STI owner looking to enhance their driving experience. While the installation can be tricky, especially without a lift, the results are well worth the effort.
